Thanks to F.E.A.S.T. for this video interview with leading eating disorder experts from across the world. F.E.A.S.T.'s international conference in November 2011 is calling for "an end to the era of shame and blame: parents do not cause eating disorders and patients do not choose to be ill. Evidence-based treatment and family involvement save lives".
Yet despite these experts shouting the Good News from the roof tops, it's such a crying shame that so much eating disorder treatment nowadays is still firmly entrenched in the beliefs of the past - beliefs that the above experts claim there is "no evidence" to support.
It's something that frustrates so many parents of young people with eating disorders. Thanks to the power of the internet we move amongst these enlightened circles (F.E.A.S.T. etc) and get feedback from the world's leading eating disorder experts like Prof Janet Treasure, etc only to find ourselves faced, in reality, with outdated treatment and theories.
I've said this before - it's like having the proof that penicillin cures infection only to visit the GP who insists that "in his umpteen-years experience of treating infections leeches are the best approach" and what do we know as ignorant lay people, hey..?
Looking for information on eating disorders in boys? Worried that your son has an eating disorder? How can you tell if a boy has an eating disorder? In 2009 my 15-year-old son developed anorexia. Now, aged 28, he is recovered & studying psychology in order to help others. This blog tells the story of my son's recovery from anorexia as well as raising awareness of eating disorders in boys.
